Take yourself back in time and immerse yourself in the interactive experience of three exhibitions, as you journey through 5,000 years of Towcester's history.
The road we are built on, Watling Street, has played a huge role in the development of Towcester. It's been a highway for military settlements, an international border, and a major coaching route.
These three striking and unique exhibitions are sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and we're very grateful for their support.
Stone Age to Roman Towcester
From the Stone Age to the Fall of the Roman Empire
(c.3500BC – 420AD)
We trace the origins of Towcester from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages all the way to the end of the Roman occupation.
Discover how our town grew along the ancient road of Watling Street and view remarkable artefacts that tell the story of life thousands of years ago.

Our story continues through the Anglo-Saxon, Normal and Medieval eras to the Civil War and the Great Fire of Towcester.
Colourful characters are brought to life and we delve into the battles that took place here.

Follow Towcester’s evolution into a bustling coaching town during the Georgian era, through the industrial changes of the Victorian age, two world wars, and the shaping of the town we know today.

History made fun!
At Towcester Museum, we aim to make history exciting, accessible and memorable for children of all ages.
Our younger visitors can meet Dorum, our friendly (and slightly mischievous!) rat guide, who shares some of the more grisly and surprising facts from Towcester’s long and fascinating history.
Through stories, puzzles and quizzes, Dorum helps bring the past to life in a way that’s fun, engaging and easy to understand.
